HDPE pipe used in upgrades at Three Mile Creek
HDPE pipe used in upgrades at Three Mile Creek
The city of Mobile, Alabama started a project in 2018 to replace an old 36" and 42" trunk sewer with a new 11,000 ft, 60" diameter gravity trunk sewage main. A section of the pipe on the south bank of Three Mile Creek would be upgraded before crossing over and finishing at a Severe Weather Attenuation Tank. Due to the scale of the pipe and buildings, one of the primary design problems with this project was evaluating the buildability of the suggested improvements. There were site restrictions in the locations where the pipe would be put, which limited the length of pipe that could be installed as well as the available working space.
Engineers used two diameters of AGRU HDPE pipe to overcome installation restrictions, giving the contractor ample flexibility to finish the installation while also controlling site constraints. The installation method was horizontal directional drilling (HDD). In addition, because certain current segments could not be expanded in diameter, the engineer devised a solution based on portions of 48” and 63” diameter pipes in SDR 11. AGRU was the only company that could deliver goods that matched this criterion.
