Video - Almost 10 Miles of Water Main Being Replaced with Pipe Bursting
Replacing miles and miles of pipeline in massive infrastructure projects can be a messy, costly undertaking resulting in unhappy utility customers with service interruptions and other inconveniences. Open trenching methods cause considerable customer impacts, including dust, road closures and traffic congestion, noise, as well as the need to remove trees, mailboxes and other hardscapes. But this video from Murphy Pipeline Contractors shows how their pre-chlorinated pipe bursting trenchless installation method reduces customer inconvenience, project time and cost.
The highlighted project in this video took place in Houston, Texas in a densely populated, mature neighborhood. Just under ten miles of 6”, 8”, and 12” asbestos cement pipeline was replaced, including services, valves and hydrants with durable polyethylene pipe. Murphy used a separate staging area to minimize customer impact. Here they used butt fusion joining 40 foot sections of pipe into 500-600 foot sections, the amount installed each day. Murphy Pipelines’ pipe bursting method allowed the Houston utility provider to update their system with almost no customer complaints. To watch the video for yourself, click here.
